Dear Coffee,

I can’t pinpoint the exact start of our friendship, but I know it involved a late night studying in dorm, a Tim Horton’s run and the night ended with a sour cream glazed doughnut and a large double double. Our relationship continued to grow and soon we were inseparable! We spent mornings, afternoons and evenings together.  It didn’t matter where we were going or what we were doing, you were a constant companion.  I even broke down and asked you to move in with me when I bought a coffee grinder and french press for you (now that’s serious commitment! AND on a student’s budget!!!)

You have been a constant support in my life helping me get through two degrees ( a B.A and a M.A), commuting to various jobs, long work days, sleepless nights – well motherhood in general, hockey tournaments, ball tournaments, seeding, harvest, calving  – basically daily living over the past 16 years.

We’ve had our rough patches – Providence cafeteria coffee, any coffee that comes from the basement of a church, cheap coffee (not worth the savings), my aversion for the first 3 months of pregnancy (NEVER AGAIN!!!! I MISSED YOU SOOOOOO MUCH DURING THAT TIME!!), and that crazy angry, overemotional  time when I gave you up for Lent. I’m also sorry for trying to replace you with instant coffee, and Decaf at one point (I honestly don’t know what I was thinking!) I’m sorry for all the times I spilled you and forgot about you. (but you were so forgiving and warmed right up after being in the microwave for 30 seconds)

You’ve never judged me, and have been quietly supporting me all these years – encouraging me to tackle each day fully caffeinated. You seem to be the catalyst for impromptu meetings with other friends, and are more than willing to share your space with them. In fact you seem to bring people closer together and allow them share what is on their minds. You are also more than willing to go on a road trip in a travel mug!

We’ve moved on from our college, one cup days onto a pre -programmed, automatic drip, 12 cup brewing system. I’ve gotten over my snobbish “add nothing to my coffee” attitude, and have mellowed into a “let’s try different creamers” frame of mind.

So thank you Coffee for being such a wonderful support! I look forward to see where this relationship will go in the future ! (and by future I mean this afternoon 🙂 ) xoxo -Jo
